Identifying the needs of Jillo Sunking has exposed the need for rehabilitation services for Sierra Leone that is now in the planning stages at Sierra Leone Rising.
Stage I - January 5, 2021 to May 30, 2021
There is an immediate need to send Jillo to the (BTPOTC) Brother Tarcisius Prosthetics & Orthotics Training College in Ghana to receive an above knee prosthesis and be trained to walk independently. This will require a 5 month stay in Ghana that will require money for air travel ($540 each for mother and child, room and board for 120 days ($750.00 total), above knee prosthesis ($600 for the initial prosthesis or $2500 for all the remaining protheses until she is 18 years old) and $1000 for miscellaneous expenses. Total cost to fully rehabilitate Jillo will be $5300 USD and return her to Sierra Leone independently walking with a prosthesis and attending school.
Stage 2 - January 15, 2021 to December 15, 2024
We have the opportunity to have three Sierra Leone students enter the 3 year Prosthetic and Orthotic Training program at the (BTPOTC) Brother Tarcisius Prosthetics & Orthotics Training College in Ghana. These three students will receive their degree and certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics and then return to Sierra Leone to provide services to the people of Sierra Leone. The cost is $30,000 per student for the three year training program or $90,000USD.
Stage 3 - Fund Raising January 2021 to January 2024
We want to raise government, corporate, grants (Rotary and others) and private funds to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation center associated with the medical school (BTPOTC) Brother Tarcisius Prosthetics & Orthotics Training College in Ghana to provide rehabilitation services for orthopedic and neurologically involved children and adults in Sierra Leone. The services provided will include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, music and art therapy, and prosthetics and orthotics. In the future students will be trained in these disciplines to provide services across the country.
